With holidays abroad on the backburner this year, the money saving team at TheMoneyPig.com have put together their tips for enjoying a staycation without breaking the bank. They offer suggestions on where to stay including avoiding the obvious holiday destinations and going self-catering.
The experts also look at ways to save money once you’re there, including enjoying free activities, always packing a picnic and looking for money saving deals. A spokesperson for The Money Pig said: “The summer is normally the time for us to hit the beach and chill out abroad – this year will definitely be different for a lot of holidaymakers. “It’s a great time to explore the beautiful UK countryside and coast and make the most of our summer staycations. Despite what you may think, holidaying in the UK doesn’t have to cost a fortune and our tips will help you enjoy a week away without worrying about how much you’re spending. Before you head away though, do check what’s open and the activities you’ll be able to enjoy with your family safely.”
Here are TheMoneyPig.com ’s tips for enjoying your summer staycation on a budget:
1. Borrow a house
If you have friends dotted around the country, why not see if you can pay them a visit? Take a tent and you can pitch it in the garden if there isn’t enough room. Remember to return the favour and invite them to your place too.
2. Avoid the obvious
If you are planning to book a cottage or hotel, avoid the obvious destinations. Head further inland and you may find better deals.
3. Self-catering
The cost of eating out when you’re away soon adds up so go self-catering. It doesn’t mean you have to cook every night, it just gives you options.
4. Pack food
If you are going self-catering, take some supplies with you rather than buying them there. Tea and coffee should be on your list, maybe a few tins and a bag of pasta and rice for cooking in your holiday home. Also remember to take plenty of snacks, especially if you have children, and refillable water bottles and coffee cups.
5. Eating out
If you do eat out, have a look for any discount codes or vouchers. Check voucher sites and the restaurants own app and website.
6. Take a picnic
If you’re heading out for the day, pack a picnic. It’s a lot cheaper than buying a takeaway sandwich every lunchtime and it also means you can eat when and where you want.
7. Free activities
You don’t have to spend a fortune to have a good day out on holiday. Head for the beach, country parks and anywhere with lots of open space. Check out apps too for free, fun ways to find out more about your holiday destination.
8. Camping
Pack the tent in the car and head for a campsite. Check which ones are open well before you make the journey, check restrictions in place and make your booking in advance.
9. Stay at home
If all else fails, stay at home. Check out what’s open locally and head for places you’ve never visited before. Get a paddling pool in the garden, the deckchairs out and enjoy your time in the sun.
