Big days out
1. Pick your own pumpkin at Willows Activity Farm, London Colney
The Pumpkin Festival runs on the weekends of 10 to 11 and 17 to 18 October, then every day from 23 to 31 October, so it covers the whole of half term. Pick your perfect pumpkin, then stay for the play areas, rides and animals. Book ahead for the holiday dates.
2. Dark Arts at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour, Leavesden
The popular studio tour brings back its spooky Dark Arts takeover, with the sets dressed in ghostly Halloween decorations. It’s a brilliant treat for older children who are Harry Potter fans. Tickets for half-term days go quickly, so book now.
3. Hertfordshire Zoo, Broxbourne
Alongside more than 800 animals, Hertfordshire Zoo is home to the World of Dinosaurs. It usually runs extra seasonal activities over October half term, so check the zoo’s website for this year’s plans before you go.
Free and low-cost ideas
4. Kick through the leaves in the Lee Valley
River Lee Country Park, near Cheshunt, is at its best in autumn. The paths are flat and buggy-friendly, there’s plenty of wildlife, and it costs nothing. Pack a flask and a bag for collecting conkers and leaves.
5. The Natural History Museum at Tring
One of Hertfordshire’s hidden gems, and free to visit. The Victorian galleries are packed floor to ceiling with animals, and children love spotting their favourites. It’s a perfect rainy-day option.
6. London’s free museums
The Natural History Museum and the Science Museum in South Kensington are free to enter. Half term gets busy, so book a free timed slot online if you can, and aim to arrive when they open.
7. Verulamium Park, St Albans
A lake, ducks, a good playground and the remains of Roman walls to explore, all free. Combine it with a wander into St Albans for lunch.
When the weather turns
8. Soft play to burn off energy
When it’s pouring, soft play is a lifesaver. Fun Junction in Cheshunt is a local favourite, and you’ll find it in the Cherubs directory.
9. A creative workshop
Many local clubs, including art, drama and sports groups, run holiday workshops. It’s worth asking the ones your children already go to, or browsing the Cherubs directory for clubs near you.
